iOS: Microsoft Exchange data not syncing to the device after configuring Microsoft Exchange account

After configuring Microsoft Exchange account on an iOS device, the following symptoms may occur: No Exchange data such as emails, contacts, or calendar appear on the device. No error message appears on the device. While no emails have been received on the device, it appears that you can compose and send emails from the Exchange account (yet the intended recipient(s) will not receive your email messages).
