New features of the next-generation iPhone are being dug up by developers playing around with the iPhone OS 4.0 beta, with recent finds suggesting that the device is almost certainly going to have 720p HD video recording support.
The big revelation comes from the fact that the new iPhone OS 4.0 SDK — the software development kit — contains two presets for capturing video: 640480 and 1280720. This is a change from previous SDKs, where there was only the VGA preset as an option.
We can’t say we’re surprised — the next-generation iPhone that Gizmodo got their hands on has a larger and more powerful camera, likely 5 megapixels. Web-based HD video is growing, thanks to YouTubeYouTube supporting 720 and 1080p quality video. In fact, there’s a lot of speculation floating around that the next iPhone will be called the “iPhone HD.”
If HD video does indeed come packed with the next iPhoneiPhone, it could deal a serious blow to handheld cams like Cisco’s Flip Cam and Sony’s Bloggie.
There are few other gems and features revealed in the iPhone OS 4.0 beta: support for file sharing, a media player widget for controlling the iPod and an orientation lock via the multitasking interface are all included. We like all of these features (especially HD video), so we hope Apple keeps them in the final version of the iPhone OS 4.
